Real Name: Jason Wyngarde
Code-Name: Mastermind
Age: Unknown, presumably mid-fifties
Height: Unknown, presumably 6’2”
Hair: Unknown, presumably grey-brown
Weight: Unknown, presumably 180 lbs
Powers: Mastermind’s mutant gift is the ability to create illusions. He can literally fool the brain to believing anything, his very appearance is in question, seeing as how easy it is for him to change it at will. It is also believed Mastermind can alter memories by creating the illusion of amnesia, or of a blank slate in the mind itself. If he does possess this power, it is rarely used.
History: Before Magneto came, There was little to be said about Jason Wyngarde, a simple man who could make others see whatever he wished. After Magneto had been defeated by Charles Xavier’s X-Men, the Master of Magnetism recruited several followers. Wyngarde was one of them. Like the others, Wyngarde was there because Magneto made promises. During his tenure on the Brotherhood, Wyngarde would often try and flirt with Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch, only to have to deal with her over-protective brother, Quicksilver.
After several battles between the Brotherhood and the X-Men, the two teams discovered the presence of a powerful being. The Stranger arrived on Earth, and was confronted by the Brotherhood. When Mastermind tried to confuse him, he was turned to stone, and for a while, kept by the X-Men.
When Wyngarde recovered, he joined another Brotherhood, before they too were defeated. It was after this, that he decided to move up in the world, he managed to join the exclusive Hellfire Club’s Inner Circle. He worked with them over a number of years, all the time wanting to take the position of Black King for himself.
During this time, Magneto returned, and the X-Men first traveled through space. Unlike the 616 Mastermind, this Wyngarde never manipulated the Phoenix Force, instead, Magneto made an interesting decision, he asked the Brotherhood founders to accompany him to Asteroid M, and start a new movement. While the X-Men continued to fight for a place in the world, mutants were offered a chance to leave Earth behind and to find sanctuary on Asteroid M.
Mastermind’s position in the Hellfire Club remains. Although Magneto believes Mastermind is loyal to him and is spying on the Club, and the Hellfire Club believes he is loyal to them, and is spying on Magneto, the truth is, Mastermind isn’t spying on either grouping, and is taking advantage of any information they have to secure he lives through whatever Human-Mutant War that’s coming. It should also be noted that Wyngarde has complete knowledge of his two daughters, and is acting as their father, however, he trusts neither, and is unsure if he should be more careful around them.
